Alum Tulcea was awarded at the XXII edition of the Conference "Aluminium of Siberia" held in Krasnoyarsk for a solution of use and storage of bauxite residues
Thu, 09/22/2016 - 11:22Tulcea, 22 September 2016 - Alum S.A. (BSE: BBGA) the only producer of calcined alumina in Romania, was awarded at the XXII Conference "Aluminium of Siberia" in Krasnoyarsk for a solution for use and storage of bauxite residues.
"We are constantly investing in environmental protection projects and the fact that we won this award confirms, once again, that the solutions we implemented are viable, efficient and have a positive impact on the environment,"said Gheorghe Dobra, Alum General Manager. "The research and development teams of Alum together with external partners from renowned institutions in Romania and abroad, found the most suitable solution for safely operating the red slag dump, and this was once again confirmed by the distinction we received from the jury of specialists at the Conference of Krasnoyarsk".
The diploma of honour was awarded for the paper "Bauxite residue, safety disposal and possibilities of further utilization". The paper presents the results that Alum registered in respect to storing residues from the production of alumina and the possible use of the red slag in various industrial sectors.
The ecology project for the red slag storage system developed in collaboration with specialists from Australia Hatch Ltd., Hatch Ltd Australia, Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest and Iprolam SA Bucharest, consisted of building the installation for dry red slag storage. Thus, the company used a thickening agent for the red mud paste, installed of new pumping and transportation systems for the red slag, built a detouring channel for preventing site over-flooding and installed complete fencing and constant supervision. The red slag dump was partially closed and 35,000 trees were planted in the area.
During 2009 – 2012, Alum Tulcea invested over USD 10 million for various modernizations and technological upgrades of the red slag dump and subsequently allocated USD 500,000 annually for its maintenance in accordance with environmental regulations.
Over 600 guests from 25 countries, representing more than 150 companies, research institutions and universities attended the XXII edition of the "Aluminium of Siberia" Conference in Krasnoyarsk.
